What is a Save the Date?

Usually sent out as a postcard, this is a brief invitation that informs your guests of an upcoming wedding, the date and location, then tells them that you’ll be in touch in the near future. It is a polite way of saying please reserve this date, don’t schedule anything else on this day as we want you to celebrate with us.

When should you send it out?

For destination weddings, 8-12 months is customary. However, if you can give people more notice this would provide them with additional time to save up money for flights, resort fees, book babysitters for kids and pets.

For local weddings, 4 months in advance will ensure that you’re catching people at just the right time, they haven’t typically booked themselves into any other commitments. Then follow these up with the formal invites about 8 weeks out from your wedding date.

Sending out Save the Dates are important for a few different reasons: 

• It is especially important to send them out if you have a lot of out of town guests planning to attend the wedding. This gives them plenty of time to prepare for travel. 

• It’s also good to send them out because if your wedding is around the same time as school breaks (spring, fall, etc.), people will be planning their family vacations and will need to know to schedule around your wedding. 

• Many things could pop up between now and the time that your invites are sent (usually about two months prior to the wedding) and you don’t want your guests to make other plans and not be able to attend.  This gives your guests a reason to say “no” to other commitments that pop up.

• It lets you share your engagement photography as typically a Save The Date will showcase some photos of the couple. And it makes a great keepsake! (make sure you save one so that your photographer can photograph it on the wedding day – helps to document the journey)

• Sending out Save the Dates gives your guests the opportunity to pencil you into their schedules.

TIP – The greater notice you give your guests, the greater likelihood that they will be able to attend your wedding.

There are many different ways you can use your Save the Date photos (many times these are your engagement session photos). Here are just a few examples: 

• You can send out cards – standard, folded, or tri-folds. There are different sizes and options, galore! 
• You could opt to send out postcards instead and not have to deal with the envelopes. 
• Turn your photos into Save the Date magnets. This is great because your guests can place it on their fridge and have a constant reminder of your date.  
• You can also turn your photos into other fun things you can use at your wedding – like a guest book or signing poster, etc.
