I met Ashten & Philippe at the downtown Red Deer CPR Walking Bridge, 2 hours before sunset. That’s when the “magic light” happens, creamy and soft golden light.
We had a ton of fun as we ventured onto the bridge for some casual shots. We even got Philippe dancing! On the other side of the bridge, we ventured down a paved pathway, and then out towards the waters edge where we had to scour through the overgrown brush, finally coming to a nice clearing where the bridge was positioned perfectly in the background.
Being off the beaten path is especially romantic as my couples can truly focus on just the two of them and not worry about onlookers (or in our case that evening, homeless folks) watching them. Helping each other get through the overgrown grass, holding hands, looking lovingly into each other eyes, caressing hair and cheeks…the connection that my engaged couples have is undeniable and always reminds me of why I got married and how devoted I am to my husband!
We finished the evening session off by changing into more “dressy” outfits and bringing out some flash. I absolutely loved Ashten’s long pink dress. It fit her beautiful and was a perfect pop of colour against Philippe’s darker ensemble.
And even when I thought our session was over, I couldn’t help but get them in front of the large tree next to the underside of the bridge, pop some light onto them, before heading back to the parking lot. They were easy going and made the session really fun!
At each of my engagement sessions, I take macro (close up) shots of the ring that started it all. I honestly need to start doing these during the session but sometimes that’s not possible, as was the case this evening. The last thing I want is to have a ring fall through the bridge into the water, or get lost in tall grass. I always opt to do the ring shots when nothing bad can happen to it! So, with the use of phone flashlights, I was still successful at getting those shots, it was just harder than usual.
I am truly excited to be photographing their wedding on August 22nd in Canmore. It’ll be fun to see them again and celebrate as they actually make it official of being Mr & Mrs!
Congratulations Ashten & Philippe!
