The day started at the Four Points Sheraton Calgary West where we photographed Sean and his groomsmen getting ready. Amongst getting ready, they were busy playing Nintendo Switch with the young ring bearer. As a gift, Sean gave his groomsmen tactical boxes as well as new ties and socks for the day. The suite that we were in was very large, it made this portion of the day both easy (to move around in) but also a beautiful backdrop.
After photographing Sean and his guys, we headed next door to the bride, Neena’s suite. We had lots of time to photograph her jewellery and accessories as she finished up hair and makeup. Neena gave her bridesmaids gifts that included fuzzy shawls to keep them warm and floral robes. During our time with Neena, I especially loved her rose-gold shoes and the delicate jewellery that she wore, and check out that adorable purse! It was pretty clear while photographing the guys and girls, that their bridal party meant a lot to them – close friends who had helped shape who they are and they enjoyed journeying through life together!
The first look was incredibly emotional. Working with a large mirror in the room, we situated Sean near the window. As Neena came in and tapped him on the shoulder, he turned around and we were able to capture his true emotions both directly and indirectly using the mirror. He was truly overjoyed to see his soon-to-be wife and how absolutely stunning she was. After this, the couple took a few moments to read personalized letters that they had for one another. We allowed them complete privacy for this part.
Formals were a ton of fun with this large group. We started off at Bowness Park, where a bit of snow could still be found on the ground. There is always a ton of different looks at this park – water, trees, grassy areas, bridges. We first photographed the entire bridal party together, both in a formal look and then a fun “cheering” group shot. After that, we broke into separate groups, photographing the ladies on their own and then the men. This is the time where we get individual shots of each person (great for LinkedIn or Tinder…ha ha…that’s what I always say to them), plus we pair each person up with the bride/groom, and of course group shots of the girls and guys. Then it was time to photograph the bride and groom on their own. The entire bridal party stuck around, helping us hold jackets and flowers as we switched throughout a variety of poses and locations.
After finishing at Bowness, we headed to Angel’s Drive-In which was right around the corner. The group ordered burgers and milkshakes, and had a relaxing time sitting at a few of the tables inside. The place was packed with people, but we managed to find a few corners to use. We captured candid shots of the group eating and laughing together, plus we took Sean and Neena outside to do some photos in front of the vintage-looking building. With the stainless steel look of the walls, and the large vehicle over the front door, old records and black and white motif, this location was a fun spot. Something out of the ordinary!
After photographing the family in the lobby of the hotel, it was time for the ceremony. As Neena’s dad is no longer with us, her Uncle had the honour of walking her down the aisle. Throughout the day, Sean carried Neena’s dads wallet with him, to help keep him close throughout the day. After exchanging rings and saying their vows, they signed their marriage certificate and then shared their first kiss as husband and wife.
After entering the reception hall, speeches were given. Then a unique presentation happened where friends reenacted how Sean and Nina met. It was similar to a Bollywood style of film and included a number of the kids in the group. This was such a special touch for the couple, it was obvious that they really appreciated the effort.
Dinner was followed by a dance that literally just erupted on the dance floor. This group knows how to dance, and I’m sure it kept going, long after we left that night!
Here’s a few of my favourite images from this special day…Congrats Neena & Sean!
