You know the saying, “third time’s the charm?” Well, it certainly was the case for Maddy Kuan and Thor Roberts-Scarlett when it came to tying the knot. As we know, when COVID-19 entered our world, it didn’t care that it would knock over people’s important plans, including the many weddings that were set to take place. Suddenly, couples across the globe had to make quick decisions about their futures. Maddy and Thor attempted to get married two times before they were able to have their picturesque wedding in beautiful Canmore, just east of Banff, in the mountains. It definitely was worth the wait!
The intimate ceremony occurred up on a hill, just above the Canmore Nordic Centre. The actual site, nestled amongst a grove of trees with mountains in the distance, is called “Tree Island.” There was some smoke in the air coming all the way from the fires in B.C so the mountains weren’t as clear as they would have been otherwise. However, that didn’t stop it from being visually stunning. The whole wedding was earthy in tone as the bridal party wore pretty pale green, which played off perfectly with the dark green from the surrounding trees. And the reception hall consisted of vaulted ceilings and rustic beams.
Only 35 people were in attendance for the wedding, with many travelling from Ontario for the big day. Maddy and I had the fun discovery that we went to the same university in St. Catharines, Ontario! We also had other things in common such as that we grew up in Ontario and then came out here to Alberta for jobs. But my personal favourite is that they love dogs as much as I do. In fact, their dog who is an important part of their little family, joined them for the wedding party photos. It was the things we shared in common that led them to immediately knowing after our first meeting, that I’d be a good fit to photograph their special day. It was an honour to witness and capture their love with my camera. Their spontaneity, laughter and sweet glances were as refreshing as the tall green trees that day.
How did you meet?
We met and exchanged numbers at a party in Guelph, where I went to school and Thor was living at the time. I met his brother at the same party and I guess they were both texting me from time to time. A few months later, Thor realized it and he called DIBS!
What was the proposal like?
Thor proposed spur of the moment, when we got home late one night after a New Years Eve party. The next day was New Years, so we went ring shopping the day after that!
This question is for the bride. Maddy, which moments stand out from your wedding day?
I was so nervous throughout the ceremony but looking into Thor’s eyes just completely calmed me down. The speeches were also amazing.
This question is for the groom. Thor, what went through your mind when you saw your bride for the first time?
I thought, “Wooow!”
Can you share any tips about planning a wedding for future couples getting married?
Plan to go over budget lol! Also food and drink is probably the most important thing to spend on.
Congratulations to the bride and groom! 🙂
