This past weekend, teams from across Alberta and Saskatchewan gathered in Lacombe for the Annual Ice Breaker Tournament. There was plenty of excitement come Sunday, when the finals were being played!
As a special treat to the teams, the organizers wanted to provide each team with some action shots of the Final Games. That’s where I come in! I have honestly never been to a ringette game and although it looks very similar to a hockey game, I actually think Ringette is harder. Instead of stopping a round puck with an extended piece of hockey stick blade, these ladies had only a stick, and needed to be precise in hitting the centre of that round ring when it came flying at them. Now, I was never good at baseball because I couldn’t get the bat to meet the ball (ever!)…so I’m pretty sure that I wouldn’t be good a ringette either! But these ladies were amazing to watch! And the older they were, boy did they get fast on the ice!
Thanks for including me in this fun day of ringette and for letting me come out onto the ice to photograph many of you! Watching your amazing talents made me wish that I knew how to play the sport (or at least know how to skate better!).
Interested in learning more about ringette and how you can get involved, check out the Lacombe Ringette Association.
“Since the early 1960s, the sport has continued to grow and currently boasts nearly 30,000 registered players on nearly 2000 teams, with over 8000 coaches and over 1500 officials. While it is primarily a female sport, there are currently over 700 males playing ringette across the country.
Ringette, like hockey, is played on ice with skates and sticks with six players per team on the ice at once. The objective is to score goals by shooting the object of play into the opposing team’s net at either end of the rink during stop-time periods of play. But this is where the comparisons between ringette and hockey really end. The stick is straight. The object being pursued by the players is a rubber ring, not a puck. There is no intentional body contact. And the rules of ringette make it a wide-open and dynamic sport.“
